Hi,

I've been distributing leaflets in my local area for a short while, and through word of mouth have never had to advertise.

I want to expand by moving into a new area, and was wondering what the best way of doing this is.  I don't like being intrusive and phoning people, so was thinking about emailing prospective clients.  Can I take your opinions on the email I should send - long and detailed or short and maybe miss bits out?

Any comments much appreciated.   Grin

Some tough love is required here I think Smiley Sorry but the very best way of aquring new customers is cold calling, emails are too easily ignored or blocked. If you dont want to do it yourself then you should outsource it. There are quite a few companies and individuals who will take on this task for you and the results can be very good depending on the product. Hope it goes well - Gina Smiley

Yeah unfortunately this is true! Cold calls might be your best option, as this won't be ignored as easily as emails and letters. Although I would send emails out as well - and I would stay keeping it short and to the point is your best bet! Try to personalise each email a little too. This is a great little touch, and may keep them reading.

Absolutely agree with this, personalisation, relevance and the benefits of your product/service is paramount also repitition without spamming them all the time just timely reminders you exist with special offers if appropiate etc.

I feel that you be missing out on a great source of new business !

You current clients !

Call them up and ask for referrals.

It's a simple task really.

'Hi Bill ( for eg ) I'm glad that we got the last lot of leaflets out for you on time, have you been happy with our service so far ? Bill I was wondering if you have the names of 2 or 3 other compaines that you think would benefit from our services ? '

Chances are that they are happy with you service  Wink , so will have no problem giving you the information .

Always ask for '2 or 3' they will most likely go for the lowest denominator here but this still gives you 2 new prospects.

Give them a call, introduce yourself and let them know that Bob has been happy and thought their business could benefit from your service too.

Whether you get the new business or not, call 'Bob' back after a couple of days and let him know how nice the 2 prospects were, then once again ask for 2 or 3 more names of people.

The power of referals based on your current clients should never be ignored in business.

Look after them, send them small gifts if you do get new business from the referral.

Repeat this process and it will be one of the most valuable marketing activity you will ever do.

We get lots of referrals for the loan business whether we ask for them or not. People ring us up and say that a 'friend' told them about us. I always ask who this friend was, and if its a customer who has a poor payment history who has referred them, then we decline - politely of course Smiley

Apart from the tips you've been given, have you considered handwritten letters sent out in hand addressed stamped envelopes to a target market? There is something about a handwritten letter that almost compels you to read it, even if it just draws the reader to visit your website.

I think that the handwritten letter tip is a good idea, time consuming but well worth the effort I would think - Ali

Dear Ali

Thank you for your post. We are currently promoting handwritten direct mail, before handwriting becomes a lost art.
