Odd question maybe, but is there anyone out there who has an interest in it/

Do you know what it is? if not then fire away and ask, I will only be too glad to answer your replies as best I can.

Here is a taster though:

SEO runs from keyword research, through layout, usability design methods of a website, coding, technical issue ,that prevent spiders reading your pages, conversion factors, and where you appear in the search engines.

Internet marketing is all about getting your site out there in front of people, and it overlaps SEO.
Internet marketing can include blogging, press releases, viral marketing, forum involvement, social networking social bookmarking and many others.

Hi,

I have a big interest in marketing, and I suppose that ties in with Internet Marketing. I have a small list of contacts for both offline and online marketing that I hope to tap into one day to get my product/services out there.

How are you involved with SEO and Internet Marketing? Many years of experience? I am quite young and so I just have motivation and curiosity to fuel me :]

I am involved in SEO as that is how I earn my living. I work with other people, have my own sites, and own portions of other peoples businesses as part of profit share deals set up.

I have been an online marketer since about 5 years before Google existed, set up my first websites in 1995, got them to number 1 on Altavista, lycos, hotbot, alltheweb etc, and then set about working out why they had got there, and in the cases of why they weren't there, why OTHER sites were there.  There were no forums back then, we all just got on with things ourselves, and eventually bumped into each other on message boards, and then we started sharing information.

It was too soon for the Uk so most of my contact was in the US, where I was a founder member of some of the biggest web marketing sites on the internet, like digital point, and highrankings, search enginewatch, webmasterworld etc.

I guess I was/am driven to learn, I HAVE to know why something happens, and I get to make half decent money out of it as well Wink

the best search engine by a country mile is Google, it has 80% stright share of the UK market, and that is without it supplying the data for sites like AOL, Tiscali Virgin etc.

Hi Old Welsh Guy

I'm very much interested in SEO.  I run a website so it is in my interest to learn about it!

So many people, particularly small business owners, fail to recognise the importants of a good Google ranking in terms of genterating trust and most importantly... sales!

Any good advice you can give regarding SEO would be very much appreciated.

For 'GENERATING' links? So you are asking how to generate links as opposed to get links pro actively/

Ok
1. Create very useful unique content that people will bookmark. If they bookmark it, they might socially bookmark it and also link to it in forums etc.
2. Create something viral that people will link to
3. Create a tool that is really useful so people link to it.
4. Create a good resourse page of out bound links that people will link to
5. Run a competition that people will link to

That is just 5 off the cuff, I could probably do better if I took the time Wink

Thanks Old Welsh Guy, you're very good...  I love that top 5 list and will be cracking on with it asap!  I'm trying to build up the content of my website and some of it has been bookmarked.  As for the viral thing I'm going to have to have a good think about that one, the same goes for the competition.

With regard to point 4, would that not leak a fair bit of page juice though?

With regard to point 4, would that not leak a fair bit of page juice though?

not worth worrying about.

eg

Say you have a pr2 page with 10 internal links on it. you link out to 20 pages, so your internal PR transfer has been sliced by 66% (not lost, as you vote and retain PR0. so whereas those 10 links might each have been carrying .17 or PR to each link, they now carry .085. BUT as a result you get some backlinks from a couple of PR4/5 sites. This in turn pushes the actual PR of the page to pr4 so now you are getting .12 Pr through all of your links. so in theory YES you might have lost a little bit of link juice from those exrta links on that page.

Here is the thing though. those links are natural links, they will be themed, and they will carry a LOT of weight to help push your site up the rankings. So the minute lose of internal voting PR is VASTLY outweighed by the overall link juice boost from the links. It could also end up placing your site as a hub or even an authority site for that topic.

The content of a page has no bearing on the PR a page gets. You can get PR to a page that doesn't exist!

Ho can I give you an example of a non exitent page?

1. Pick a page on a domain that doesn't exist (or register a new domain).

2. build links to that page/domain

3. Wait for a PR update

4. Upload the page and it will have the pr from the links you have built.

So how can you write this:
"The content of a page has no bearing on the PR a page gets. You can get PR to a page that doesn't exist!"

So how can you write this:
"The content of a page has no bearing on the PR a page gets. You can get PR to a page that doesn't exist!"

Because it is true, that is how I can write it. I am not sure what you are trying to state/ask in the bold statement. Sad

I will try to explain it better Smiley

In my example, you got the backlinks to a page that didn't exist, you did this by linking to a non existent domain/page . PR was applied to this page when it didn't exist. You then uploaded a page, and the PR showed. (because the page resolved to a 200 OK header responce rather than a 404 file not found.

Does that fully explain my statement?

Hi 'Old Welsh Guy'

Marketing is a life-long obsession for me, so I tend to regard SEO as a necessary evil Wink

If you're interested in discussions of a technical nature, I'm up for that. And if you're happy to wander into other areas of online marketing, I'm keen for that too. Anything from a debate on where the primary keyword ought to go in the title tag, though to whether or not CAPTCHA's elimination of spam is worth the hit in response.

It's all good as far I'm concerned.

Regards
Wayne

Google has only 2 things with which to decide how it ranks a site.

1. what the site says it is about
2. what other sites say the site is about.

Which recommendation would you say is the stringer? someone who recommends themselves, or someone recommended by others?

The answerto ranking is in the answer to that question.

Hi Old Welsh Guy. I have a question for you. What do you think if more valuable these days, social bookmarking back-links or article directory backlinks? I'm thinking of both direct SEO and to drive relevant traffic.

Social bookmarking will be far more likely to drive traffic than Directory links, unless the directories are real, such as  kellysearch or applegate etc.

As far as from an SEO perspective goes, I would think it depends on the authority of the SB or Directory site as to which is a better help for your rankings.

Articles are great, as long as they are done properly and post submission is also done properly.

As spock says, it isn't black and white here.
