Links pointing in to the pages of your site are an essential element for ranking for any phrase that has competition. So how does everyone here go about building backlinks?
I will stand back for a while and allow everyone else to post, then I will chime in with any hints tips and trade secrets

How about you just spill the beans about your trade secrets
Initially I submitted to a load of directories which now aren't worth much juice apparently. Also have done forum sigs and post links, blog comments and a bit of link exchanges. Must do some article writing soon too. The general thing I try to do is use good anchor text whenever possible. It's an ongoing job anyway!

That wouldn't be any fun and wouldn't encourage people to think

Nothing wrong with links from good directories. Don't believe all you read.

Forum sigs good for spidering, and a bit of juice as well. Blog comments, as long as they are on topic and not 'NOFOLLOW' then again they are ok. Link exchanges depnding on how and where they are linked, again not bad (despite what some will tell you).

Article writing, is good if done properly and followed up for maximum affect. Anchor text is the crux here. make it look natural. Don't load all your links with your main phrase, vary it.

Surely links from ebay auctions would be no good as they are only temporary for like 10 days or so?
'About Me' pages as in forum profiles?

You can have 30 day auctions on ebay, even longer in ebay shop listings. I was talking about 'Me' pages on ebay which are permanant.

there are some very good article sites out there. Go articles, Article alley are good, as is ezinearticles.
RE: about pages. As long as it is cached, and is not using nofollow, it is a good link.
if you are looking for distribution though, look no further than isnare.

Hi
I came up with the idea of my website but knew nothing about the internet when it comes to building links etc. I generated links and interest in my site by submitting articles to relevant work from home sites. I also added Twitter and facebook pages recently. Although this has not generated huge hits for my site it has helped and steadily builds up users and search engine listings. It's a long process but I enjoy it and have picked up loads of contacts and built relationships with these contacts. I have swapped banner adverts and articles with people. I am still learning but I seem to be generating traffic and building a good reputation for my site.

I think my next project for the forum will have to be some kind of link building exercise, not sure where to start though, not enough hours in a day:(

I love to leverage what I do and use a service called Senuke
I will write a really good quality article and load up it up.
I then distribute that article 7 places at a time, using different anchor texts
and all pointing back to different pages on my site.
These include top article directories and high page rank web 2.0 properties
these sites have page rank from 2-8 so very powerful.
However that is just articles. Then you have
Videos
Blogs
RSS
Social networks
Bookmarking
etc

See the link in my forum signature for 66 different link building ideas. Not all of these deliver direct SEO benefit, which I believe actually helps build credibility with Google. For example, I think my Twitter page helps my ranking even though it's nofollow. But I can't prove it. Anybody care to debate the SEO benefit conveyed by Twitter, and how it might work?

Google denies using page signals, but having looked att heir patents, it is obvious that they have at the very least invested money on page signalling as part of their algorithm (possibly for news ).
Page signalling is where a page/company/url etc might be mentioned, but not linked. Twitter is a clear example of this action.
So yes I think you could be right, but it is only a tiny minute amount, but it could help with your trust rank, which in turn could help your ranking.

The thing about Twitter is that it's relatively easy to get a PR of 5, versus one's own site. I'm guessing this is about tweets and followers, plus a leg up from Twitter itself.
I suspect I also get SEO benefit from my Facebook page, despite the same nofollow links.
Like you, I suspect it's about mentions (or buzz as I would put it). Tweets that link to a site, and that get retweeted far and wide, do seem to give a site a temporary boost. I'm guessing this applies to other social media systems too.

the legupyou get will not include link juice as the link is nofollow and google ingonres it., That is crystal clear, they will not go back on that. So the PR5 thing isn't of value. Also if you have to be logged in to see your facebook page, then again the links are of no use (same applies renofollow).
the best way to check is to have a look at the cache.

...so the PR5 thing isn't of value...
Not for the flow of SEO 'value', but PR is still an indication of Google's assessment of the value of the page. As you say, this is about the conversation rather than the value of a specific link. My guess is that Google doesn't place equal value on conversations, just as it doesn't place equal value on a link.

Also if you have to be logged in to see your facebook page...
You don't have to be logged in to view a Facebook page. You do have to log in to become a fan of a Facebook page. As with followers in Twitter, I think one way Google determines the value of a Facebook page is by the number of fans it has. And that a mention on a page with lots of fans is more valuable than a mention on a page with few.

I'm a newbie here and noticed this discussion. Although no-follow links don't have any direct impact on your SEO, they are still extremely valuable as it's always best to build all types of links into your site so you have a natural link graph. It'll look pretty suspect if you only have do-follow links. The no follow tag only stops Page Rank being passed but it'll still pass authority, relevance, etc to your back link graph.

Whilst I 100% agree with the making the footprint look normal, Google treat nofollowed links as paid links, and as such don't pass any benefit whatsoever, beyond the normal noise thing.
